May Contain

The Mission

Bring allergy awareness by Educating, Equipping and Empowering the youths to advocate for and be an ally to all sufferers.

My Story...

I was only 6 months old when my grandfather lovingly and innocently fed me an Indian sweet with cashews in it. Immediately breaking into hives, my parents got me tested soon after, confirming the allergy. Fast forward to a few years ago, I was shopping with my grandmother, in which we excitedly bought a trail mix that did not list tree nuts, or so we thought. As soon as we reach home, and as I take a handful of the savory, sweet snack, my hand is overwhelmed with a tingling sensation. My grandmother and I pierce our gazes into the tiny lettering which reads, “may contain traces of tree nuts.” Appalled by how vague this statement was and how quickly I broke into a reaction, I contacted the company that manufactured the trail mix, and the brand issued a recall. This was the exact moment I realized the power of advocacy for the allergy community. I have made it my mission to try and bring this awareness of what “may contain” really means on ingredient labels and beyond to schools. Utilizing my position on the student advisory board for the Arizona Department of Education and as an ambassador for FARE (Food Allergy Research & Education), I support allergy awareness programs in our schools. I have also continued the “Be a Pal” program to title-one and other local elementary schools to start educating at a youth level.
